8th Graders at PS 122 Awarded “Superior” for Project Citizen Portfolio

August 21, 2015: Congratulations to PS 122 Mamie Fay school and Dimitria Kamaris’ 8th graders (now incoming freshmen) for their “Superior” award at the Project Citizen National Showcase! Project Citizen is designed to engage students of all ages in the research and design of a public policy in their school or community. Ms. Kamaris’ class breaks into small groups to each create a public policy presentation on an issue of their choice, ranging from teen marketing to standardized testing. The winning portfolio researched and proposed solutions to NYC air quality. The project was chosen from the NYC Project Citizen showcase in June to represent New York at the national level. The Center for Civic Education held the national showcase in July. Maria Gallo, Director of Professional Development and Special Programs, commended their efforts: “The teacher and students did a great job of seeking a viable public policy solution for a problem in their community. The work of these young citizens is to be admired, encouraged and promoted.”

The Workshop is an interactive, discussion-based session that provides students with a comprehensive overview of city government, the functions of each elected position, and that voting has on their daily lives. The run time for the workshop is 45 minutes to an hour. Centered around issues effecting NYC youth, the workshop challenges students to think critically about how these issues effect themselves, their peers, families, and communities. Through the method of peer-to-peer engagement the students participate in a dynamic discussion that journeys them through the importance of voting and civic engagement, and guides them towards making personal connections between their issues and the roles of their elected officials.
