NYC High School Students: Apply Now to the Sonia & Celina Sotomayor Summer Judicial Internship Program!

March 2, 2016 – The Sonia and Celina Sotomayor Judicial Internship Program is now accepting applications for its summer 2016 internship program. High school students from underserved communities will be exposed to careers in the law through an internship with a Judge in state or federal courts throughout New York City,  as well as weekly seminars, including sessions on college preparation, essay writing, professional skills, legal research and writing, and exploring different legal career options. The program will be held from July 5, 2016 through July 29, 2016.  To apply, please visit http://scsjip.org/hs_program.html. Program Description:

 Over the course of four (4) weeks students will intern with state and federal judges in New York City.  Throughout the four weeks, students will be exposed to the daily operations of the courtroom, and will work with the courtroom personnel, including the judge, law secretary or judicial assistant, law clerk, and court officer or deputy clerk.  These activities may include assisting with clerical filings, research, drafting and/or preparing documents.  Students will also observe attorneys as they present their cases to the court.  All students are required to work a minimum of six hours a day for five days a week.

Current 10th and 11th graders are eligible to apply. The application deadline is March 18, 2016.  A mandatory orientation will be held on May 21, 2016.  Orientation details will be sent to all accepted students.

Compensation:    This is an unpaid internship program.  All students accepted into the internship program will receive: (1) a MTA metro card to subsidize their travel expenses and (2) a FREE online SAT Preparatory course to help them prepare for standardized testing for colleges.
