High School Law Essay Contest! Assoc. of Justices of the Supreme Court and NY Law Journal

March 29, 2016 – The Association of Justices of the Supreme Court of the State of New York and the New York Law Journal have partnered with the New York City Dept. of Education to sponsor the Sixteenth annual essay contest for 10th, 11th and 12th grade high school students. Ten students will win the opportunity to intern for one week with a Justice of the Supreme Court and earn a $100.00 gift
card. A maximum of ten entries from each school will be considered. One of the winning essays will be published in the New York Law Journal, a legal periodical published by the ALM. Ceremony on Tuesday May 17, at the NYC Bar.

The Law Day theme for 2016, is “Miranda more than words.” In 2016, we mark the 50th anniversary of one of the nation’s best-known U.S. Supreme Court cases: Miranda v Arizona, (384 US 436 [1966]). The Miranda Warning has become ingrained in law enforcement and has permeated popular consciousness through countless recitations in films and television shows.

The 2016 Law Day theme will explore the procedural protections afforded by the U.S. Constitution, how these rights are safeguarded by the courts, and why the preservation of these principles is essential to our liberty.

Students should write a 500 word essay presenting a compelling discussion on the topic with special focus on the importance and impact of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Miranda v Arizona, (384 US 436 [1966]).
