NYCLA Hosts 2016 Youth Law Conference

May 12, 2016 – On May 6, over 100 freshmen and sophomore students from their schools’ Law Academies attended the annual Youth Law Conference at New York County Lawyers’ Association.  The day included workshops facilitated by lawyers focusing on student rights, the grand jury process and criminal and civil law.  Students were given hypothetical scenarios resembling actual legal cases, and the workshop leaders helped the students perform legal analyses and role plays.

This year, Attorney Jameelah Hayes, Director of Programs at Legal Information for Families Today, was the keynote speaker. She has been a volunteer judge for the NYC high school Mock Trial and a supervisor for the JRC Work-Based Learning high school internships. Students heard about her career path, inspirational story, and advice for future attorneys. The day was filled with engaging guest speakers, rich discussions in workshops, and a culminating student raffle.

Students complete their program evaluations and win prizes at the JRC raffle.
