NYC Mock Trial teams come in 2nd and 3rd place at State Finals

Congratulations to Regis High School and Hunter College High School for their strong showing (2nd and 3rd place, respectively) at the NYSBA Mock Trial state tournament!

The state finals in Albany marked the end of another successful season of Mock Trial. In New York City, nearly 90 schools from all five boroughs participated, and over 150 volunteer attorneys and judges gave their time and energy to provide this positive educational experience to well over a thousand students.

The Justice Resource Center would like to thank the teachers, school faculty, parents, and court staff for their hard work that makes this program possible.

Call for Mock Trial Lawyer-Coaches

The Justice Resource Center has issued a call for lawyer-coaches for high school teams for the 2017 New York State Mock Trial Tournament.

High schools throughout all five boroughs need coaches. Coaching sessions usually take place after school hours, with teams meeting their lawyer-coach once or twice a week. All teams have a teacher-coach assigned to coordinate coaching sessions. The case will be distributed in early December 2016, and competitive rounds start in late February 2017. The top teams will go on to compete in the state finals in Albany May 21-23.

In addition, those who are eligible can receive up to three (3) CLE credit hours from the NYSBA for coaching a mock trial team.

Last Call! NYSBA Mock Trial Summer Institute for HS Students

June 2, 2016 – The New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) is again offering the Mock Trial Summer Institute (MTSI) for high school students! The New York State MTSI is an intensive week long education camp for high school students who are involved in or would like to be a part of Mock Trial. NYC HS Mock Trial Final: Congratulations to High School of American Studies at Lehman College!

April 22, 2016 – Congratulations to High School of American Studies at Lehman College for their victory in the NYC High School Mock Trial Final Round! The team competed against Tottenville High School in the Southern District of New York (SDNY) Ceremonial Courtroom on April 18 with SDNY federal judge Honorable Torres presiding. Several participating schools, attorneys and educators came to watch as finalists gave their arguments. Many thanks to all participants this year!

This spring, 82 high school teams from all five boroughs competed during preliminary rounds at the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse, Brooklyn Federal Courthouse and Queens Supreme Court. Students took on the roles of prosecutors, defense, and witnesses in the case The People v. Kelly Roberts, written by the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA). Students were coached by their Law Academy teachers and MENTOR attorneys. Attorneys and federal judges volunteered to judge the rounds.

The two finalist teams will compete at the NY State Mock Trial rounds in Albany, NY, from May 15-17th, 2016. Go NYC!
